We craft and preserve beautiful, enduring experiences
Together, let’s continue to build a community that honours our past and empowers our future.
Objectives
The core objectives of the Ugandans in Bristol Association are:
- Celebrating Our Heritage
- Unity
- Empowering Our Communities
Celebrating Our Heritage
To promote and preserve Ugandan cultural heritage among our members and the wider community. We organize cultural events, festivals, and educational programs to celebrate our traditions and share them with others.
Unity
To foster unity and solidarity among Ugandans living in Bristol. We provide a supportive network for new arrivals and long-term residents alike, encouraging mutual support and cooperation
Empowering Our Communities
To support the development and well being of our community both in Bristol and in Uganda. We engage in charitable activities, community development projects, and initiatives that empower our members economically, socially, and educationally.
A Foundation Built on Community Spirit
The story of Ugandans in Bristol is one of resilience and initiative. For many years, our community grew without a formal structure, thanks to the dedication of pioneers like Rev Onesmus, Miss Imelda “Kaka”, and Mr. Douglas Tushabe. This changed in 2007 when a historic meeting at Joan Kaweera’s residence led to the formal creation of our association. Our first executive committee, led by Chairman Mr. Jaggwe Hakim Swaib, Vice Chairperson Mrs. Joweria Muwada, and Publicity Secretary Mr. Umar Nyanzi, provided the crucial leadership to unite us.
A New Chapter: Renewed Energy & Formalized Vision
A significant milestone was reached in October 2024, when the community ushered in a renewed era of leadership by appointing Hasifa Nabale as Chairperson and Nathan Namatati as Vice Chairperson.
This new team is proud to build upon a solid foundation of past achievements, which include:
• Successfully hosting iconic cultural events, most notably the annual
Independence Day celebrations attended by dignitaries from the Uganda High Commission.
• Fostering profound unity through interfaith dialogues and cherished
events that honour our roots, such as music and drama nights at the
Malcolm X Centre.
• Providing critical support during times of need, demonstrating our
powerful sense of togetherness through community-funded repatriation
efforts.
• Establishing a stable and transparent financial foundation with the Bristol Credit Union.
Guided by the recommendations of past leaders, the current executive is now focused on key goals: formalizing our governance structure, introducing annual subscriptions to ensure sustainability, launching impactful projects like a community minibus, and achieving charitable status.
This marks our purposeful evolution from informal gatherings into a structured, forward looking organisation poised for greater impact in Bristol and beyond. We deeply honour the dedication of those who came before us and enthusiastically embrace the future, committed to strengthening our vibrant community for generations to come.
